Blu Mare
Pillows, 2014–2016

Hand-dyed, hand-sewn, and using second-hand textiles, the Blu Mare collection was created in response to the thousands of people forced to cross the Mediterranean under inhumane conditions, particularly in the summer of 2014—the most fatal for migrants trying to reach Europe. The gross proceeds of Blu Mare were donated to Movement On The Ground, a Dutch organization responding to the humanitarian crisis affecting the innocent women, men and children forced from their homes by imperialism, war, poverty, and climate change. This organization was selected due to the personal and local involvement of a dear friend. The cushions feature amateur Shibori patterns which result from the ancient Japanese pleat and bind technique of the same name.
